Change of Season? Change of Air Filter!

Your AC worked hard all summer keeping you cool and with fall quickly approaching, it's time for some seasonal maintenance. Your HVAC’s air filter, also known as a furnace filter, plays a critical role in keeping your air conditioning and heating system running smoothly. Acting like a mask for your HVAC system, the air filter traps dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, preventing them from reaching the sensitive, and often expensive, air handler. These filters are often forgotten heroes, preventing expensive repairs while maintaining your energy costs.

Why Changing Your HVAC Air Filter Matters

Changing your air filter regularly is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality and ensuring your HVAC system's efficiency. The debate on how often you should change your HVAC filter is ongoing, but most experts agree that you shouldn't wait more than three months between changes. The frequency depends largely on factors like the air quality in your home, the presence of pets, and any allergies.

Air Filter Sizes: Why They Matter

When it comes to air filter sizes, there's no room for opinion—only facts. The size of the filter must precisely match the size of your HVAC system’s return vent. If the filter is too small, it can get sucked into the system, along with all the dust and debris it's supposed to catch. If it's too large, it won't fit properly or create an effective barrier. Always double-check the required dimensions before purchasing a replacement.

Understanding MERV Ratings

Another key factor to consider is the filter's MERV rating, which measures how effectively the filter catches particles. The higher the MERV rating, the denser the filter, and the better it is at trapping particles. However, a higher MERV rating also means less airflow, which can strain your HVAC system. For most homes, a MERV 8 filter strikes the right balance between filtration efficiency and airflow.

Beyond the HVAC: Consider Air Purifiers

If you're looking for even better air quality, consider using air purifiers throughout your home. These devices come with their own filters and are specifically designed to clean the air you breathe, which benefits your health and takes some of the burdens off your HVAC system.
